When did God make the angels?

4 minute read

Finding the answers to questions like this one about angels requires humility and a little digging in the Scriptures. God gave us the Old and New Testaments so that we might know God and understand ourselves and the world around us.

_The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law_. (Deuteronomy 29:29)

When did God make the angels?

God gives us the strongest information about the making of the angels in Psalm 104:

1 Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty. 2 Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain: 3 Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind: 4 **Who maketh his angels spirits**; his ministers a flaming fire: 5 Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever. 6 Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a garment: the waters stood above the mountains.

The first thing we learn from this passage is that God did in fact create the angels. Verse 4 says that angels are created spirit beings akin to flames of fire.

God created the heavens first (verse 2), then God made the angels, and after that laid the foundations of the earth (verse 5).

Genesis and the creation of the angels

The foundation of our knowledge comes from the book of Genesis. Its history starts In the beginning. Since angels are created spirits, we know that they must have been created after the beginning, and so sometime in the history Genesis relates.

God made the heavens on day 2

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day. (Genesis 1.6-8)

God made the earth on day 3

And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the third day. (Genesis 1.9-13)

Genesis states that heaven was created on day 2, and the earth on day 3.

The first mention of God’s created angels

The book of Genesis introduces angels in chapter 3, verse 1:

1, Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?...4, And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

Something strange is happening here. You might say, This is talking about a serpent, not an angel. But the serpent is a physical animal, a beast of the field. He was created on day 6 (Genesis 1.24-2). God pronounced all the beasts of the field good. Yet this one is violating God’s moral order by lying. How can this be?

The best explanation is that this animal is operating under the control or possession of an angel. We discover later that the angel was Satan, commonly referred to by his modern day followers as Lucifer. The ultimate result was the fall of man, also known as original sin.

Conclusion

Angels are spirits made by God. The Bible does not come out and clearly answer, when did God make the angels? However, there is enough evidence provided to suggest that God made the angels either on the second day after He created Heaven or on the third day before He created the earth.

Well, done – Same thing many good theologians (and me) have said for generations. Only one bone to pick – Satans name ISNT Lucifer. Never was :) http://watchmansbagpipes.blogspot.com/2010/08/is-satans-name-lucifer.html

I knew that angels are created beings and not to be worshiped, but never considered when they where created. Ill try to be a good Berean and ponder on it further with the Holy Scriptures. Its good to know these things. In 2012, the night before my last surgery, I had a near death experience where I almost crossed over. My heart stopped, but before I completed my journey to eternity, an angel pulled me back to the living. The only thing I remember about the angel is that he was very bright. (They dont have wings either but the rays of light must have been mistaken for wings in ancient artwork.) Also, didnt hear or speak to anyone as I approached my LORD but I must say that what I took back from it is we will all be happily surprised at how much Jesus loves us. HE is pure love and everything we will ever need or want forever. ~:)

You might be jumping to a conclusion. In the beginning would be the beginning of our universe or such. We know God predated Genesis, so its conceivable the angels as a creation predated our “environment”. Also Ps 104, if chronological, may not be,: 4 Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire: 5 Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever. Of course, that follows : 3 Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind: Its a good discussion, but I dont think conclusive.

Hi Ed, Perhaps youre right.
I like what Matthew Poole says about Genesis 1.1:
In the beginning, to wit, of time and things, in the first place, before things were distinguished and perfected in manner hereafter expressed.
Before time and things. If there was anything before that, God would have told us. Since He did not, we are on solid ground basing our reasoning on what has been revealed. So the idea that there were previous universes before this one is myth. The only creatures created in the image of God are human, placed in the garden of whose descendants we are.
At least thats how I understand it. Could I be wrong? Sure. 1 Corinthians 13.12
Always glad for your perspective. Alec

Glenn, Youve sent the gears churning. To be continued in a future post. Hope you will weigh in more then. And thank you for the link. Alec

Its unclear whether it was on day 2 or day three but the idea that the creation of angels may have predated the creation of the world is, in my opinion, false. Two scripture references prove to be conclusive enough for me. First, Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” In this verse we see the creation of time (the beginning), space (the heavens), and matter (the earth). There couldnt have been time before God created time. God is apart from time; He is eternal. The next verse I reference is in the Decalog (Exodus 20:11 “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and ALL that is in them…” Since angels are created beings, they are part of the ALL that occupy time and space, therefore they had to have been created after the beginning and prior to the completion of creation on day six.
